The New York office of Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum, Inc. (HOK) announced the addition of Thomas Knittel, AIA, LEED[R] AP, to its team of highly skilled architects. Knittel joins the firm as principal and will be acting as a senior designer within the Architecture group.

With over 24 years of experience within the design industry, Knittel is responsible for the design of the Engineering and Scienee Building at the new King Abdullah Science and Technology University in Saudi Arabia.

Prior to joining HOK, Knittel was an associate principal, studio director and lead project designer with Berkebile Nelson Immenschuh McDowell Architects, Inc. (BNIM) from 1995-2005. Knittel also worked at Gastinger Walker Harden Architects (GWHA) from 1991-1995; Ellerbe Becket from 1989-1991; and Patty Berkebile Nelson Immenschuh Architects, Inc. (PBNI) from 1985-1990.

Some of the planning projects Knittel has worked on include the Navy Yard at Noisette, North Charleston, SC; and the Urban Design Framework for East Downtown, Kansas City, Missouri.

The recipient of 23 design awards at local, state and national levels, Knittel's most recent honors include the 2006 Honor Award for Excellence in Architecture, American Institute of Architects (ALA) Kansas City for the design of Camp Naish (Boy Scouts of America); the 2005 GSA Design Excellence Award; and the 2005 ASLA Excellence Award for Planning & Analysis.

Mr. Knittel earned a master's degree in design studies from Harvard University, and has a bachelor's of architecture from Kansas State University. He completed his graduate study in SCI-Arc Vico-Morcote Switzerland at the Luigi Snozzi Studio.
