Skanska USA wins accolades for iniury free hospital project
Real Estate Weekly, August 1, 2007
Skanska USA Building Inc.'s Injury-Free Environment (IFE) program is receiving well-deserved and unsolicited accolades in the Philadelphia metro area.
Skanska was honored by the Delaware Department of Labor for ensuring zero injuries during the half a million hours committed to the Christiana Care Project at the Christiana Hospital in Newark, Delaware.
Completed in 2006, the Christiana Care Project consisted of a new nine-story patient tower and a new three-story conference center, both totaling an additional 354,000 square feet for the hospital. In the spirit of the company's injury-free philosophy--creating a safety culture that requires employees to adopt personal safety as the highest value to themselves whether on a jobsite, in the office or at home--Skanska, today, shared this recognition with the 12 Philadelphia-area subcontractors who worked on the Christiana Care Project.
Held in the hospital's new conference center, the following subcontractors were recognized with an awards ceremony and safety-plaque presentation commending them for their contributions to an injury-free environment: Battaglia Electric; Delaware Elevator, Inc.; East Coast Erectors; H.K. Griffith; Quality Heating & Air Conditioning; R.A. Kennedy & Sons; Ralph G. Degli Obizzi & Sons; Romano Masonry; Sieberlich Trane; Talley Bros; Tom Wentzel Company; Skanska & Contractors.
"We are proud to share this recognition with the various subcontractors who devoted their time and energy to not only completing the project successfully, but ensuring that they put safety at the forefront of their work," said Skanska's Ed Szwarc, Philadelphia's Area General Manager.
"This program has shown that increasing accountability for one's own safety, while ensuring constant vigilance can make great contributions to minimizing the chance of sustaining injuries on project sites.
"Our hope is to spread this culture around the industry and ensure a safer working environment for all trades."
