Thornton Tomasetti announced the topping out of Comcast Tower, Philadelphia's newest commercial icon.

At 975 feet tall, the property is the tallest building between New York and Chicago, and has already gained a reputation for innovating the latest safety features for office towers.

"We are extremely proud to be the structural engineer for Comcast Tower," said Stephan Eisenreich, Thornton Tomasetti project engineer for Comcast Tower. "This project utilizes structural lessons we learned from 9/11, offering the safest floor plates and the most advanced elevator, sprinkler, and communication systems technologies."

Safety features include a concrete core with thick exterior walls; a pressurization system that would aim to retain smoke on a single floor and keep smoke out of stairwells; and the most progressive communication methods available.

Comcast Tower contains 58 stories and 1.4 million square feet of office space and is set for completion later this year. The property, at 1701 JFK Boulevard in Center City, features a state-of-the-art nine-story glass winter garden, leading to a three-story lobby and 90-foot, column-free atrium.
