DOWNTOWN Downtown (Coup de Grace)

Disguising Beatlesque song-craft beneath the cover of trippy electronic prog-rock production, this Detroit duo is the antidote to a world poisoned with pop-music cliches. Hints of John Lennon, David Bowie, and Syd Barrett are easily discerned in their kaleidoscopic chord movement and melodies that never go quite where you expect. Production by Flood and Alan Moulder (U2, Smashing Pumpkins) adds a steady hand to what might otherwise be a rudderless sense of exploration. Within these craggy, scarified industrial soundscapes, buried beneath jagged bleeps and more retro synths, a warm human heart beats.
