Kings of Leon: Aha Shake Heartbreak

Interview,  Feb, 2005  by Milena Selkirk

KINGS OF LEON Aha Shake Heartbreak (RCA)

Kings of Leon have come to a crossroads, and the four young boys from Tennessee feel compelled to answer the call of both wayward paths. There's the glamorous temptation of the North, home of the stylishly mussed Strokes, with whom they toured in 2003 and whom they mimic with minimalist guitars and melodies on "Soft" and "The Bucket." Down this road their sound is lost, and it is only when they return home and unleash stripped-down, thumping odes to trigger-happy hunters ("Pistol of Fire") and naughty barmaids ("Milk") that they sound found. Once singer Caleb Followill returns to his roots, he unleashes a mighty howl, like a coyote calling the Southern moon.
