Kate Bush

Interview,  Dec, 2005  by Justin Conner

Aerial (Columbia)

Theatrical British chanteuse Kate Bush's first album since 1993's The Red Shoes is a masterfully--some might say overly--self-produced, two-disc affair. But while the pristine production reflects a softer, lighter attitude, Bush never betrays her nontraditional roots. The songs here move like progressions, with her tremulous vocals leading into grandiose swells of upright bass, classical guitar, and cello. The second disc is the more conceptual of the two, with chirping bird sounds providing segues from one track to the next, many of them brimming with water imagery and a serene naturalism.
