Neil Diamond

Interview,  Dec, 2005  by Matt Diehl

12 Songs (Columbia)

Super-producer Rick Rubin, who oversaw Johnny Cash's heroic late-career comeback, gives another legendary yet written-off performer the same solemn, anachronistic eminence grise treatment with 12 Songs, the latest effort from Nell Diamond. For Rubin that means stripped-down production, which here convincingly transforms Diamond's sound from the latter-day kitsch to the spare, soulful "new Dylan" vibe that marked his early records. Alas, there's no fun Diamond sing-along like "Sweet Caroline" here, although "Delirious Love," featuring a cameo by Brian Wilson, comes dangerously close. Matt Diehl
