Preview: Tim Burton's Corpse Bride

Interview,  Sept, 2005  by Eric Hynes

PREVIEW: TIM BURTON'S CORPSE BRIDE (Warner Bros.) Directed by Tim Burton and Mike Johnson

Based on a Russian folktale, this ghoulish stop-motion animated film tells of a Victorian lad's accidental betrothal to a corpse with comely cheekbones. Like co-director Tim Button's 1993 film The Nightmare Before Christmas and his Edward Gorey-esque book, The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories (1997), Corpse Bride explores and conflates desire and death in spectral shades of black and grey, with sallow stick figures humanized by big doll eyes and familiar voices--supplied here by, among others, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.
