Franz Ferdinand tour mates and fellow Scotsmen Sons and Daughters sing it loud and proud in their local vernacular on their first full-length album. What was immediately appealing about the group's debut EP, last year's Love the Cup, is still present here: There's the almost mythic jig of "Monsters," the tiptoed guitars of "Choked," and, crucially, lead singer Adele Bethel's vocals, which veer from a whiskey-weary purr to a banshee wail, providing guitarist Scott Paterson's gruff sing-speak with a perfect jousting partner. Crackling with hand claps and finger snaps, and fusing primal Americana with skittish Highland folk to dazzling effect, it's impressive from beginning to end.
