The Duke Spirit: Cuts Across the Land

Interview,  Sept, 2005  by Elizabeth Goodman

THE DUKE SPIRIT Cuts Across the Land (Loog)

London quintet the Duke Spirit's heady brand of goth-pop seems to emanate from an era before office jobs and brutal hangovers, when one felt free to shamelessly indulge every emotion. Lead singer Liela Moss's icy blonde looks and ethereal vocals have her garnering Nico comparisons at every turn, and songs like "Darling, You're Mean" merge the slow-fast Pixies hallmark with hazy Mazzy Star-like vocals and serrated echoing guitars. "Lion Rip" (also the name of their debut EP) is classic, melodramatic Britpop brewed to woozy Cocteau Twins effect.
