Ceci n'est pas un sac: bags get cozy for fall

Interview,  Sept, 2005  by Annabel Tollman

Clearly shearling is no longer just for coats. Accessory designers have been lining bags for fall in shearling and fur, channeling surrealist artist Meret Oppenheim's Object (Le Dejeuner en Fourrure). As seemingly impractical as a fur teacup, a cozily lined bag will cosset your possessions and even your pets--imagine your teacup terrier being carried around in the lap of snug luxury. The idea of having such deliciously soft extravagance on the inside rather than the outside, hidden from the world, is gaspingly lavish. The fashion equivalent of a meditation session or a visit to your guru, these bags confirm that for designers this season, beauty comes from within.

Annabel Tollman is Interview's fashion director.
