Prints charming: shirts for a "happily ever after"

Interview,  Sept, 2005  by Joseph Errico

Once upon a time there lived a great sun king who designed sexy silken shirts from his South Beach palazzo. For many years his loyal subjects loved and collected his dizzying creations, and all was right with the world. Nowadays his sister, a flaxen-haired princess named Donatella, has made it possible for men to once again sartorially relive the halcyon days of print paradise. For fall, Versace showed contemporary versions of their famed scarf print shirt updated in a Klimt-like swirl, while other fashion kings and queens across the land created their own brightly printed shirts to please their devoted subjects. At Calvin Klein, Italo Zucchelli chose a spade motif for his shirts, Miuccia Prada opted for a patchwork effect for her Miu Miu collection, and Christopher Bailey took it to another level for Burberry Prorsum by showing multiple printed patterns on shirts, ties, and sweaters. Offering men a welcome reprieve from a dark and staid fall wardrobe, thankfully these shirts aren't going away anytime soon. A glimpse into the magic mirror of spring 2006 shows that Missoni, Etro, Miu Miu, and of course Versace are writing the next chapter of this fairy tale.
