Cocorosie: the twisted sister act that's splitting up indie rock

Interview,  Sept, 2005  by Sarah Wilson

The fantastical, primal soundscape of dream pop duo CocoRosie--comprised of sisters Sierra and Bianca Casady--is one filled with loves, suicides, vagabonds, and animals. "It's all about getting in touch with our myth," says Sierra. The Casadys believe in myths because their lives thus far have been colored by fantasy and chance.

"Our parents were kind of like gypsies," says Sierra. At an early age, the sisters had completely drifted apart. Bianca discovered fashion, and Sierra immersed herself in opera in Paris, where Bianca, coincidentally, found herself nearly two and a half years ago.

"She walked in my door, and she never left," Sierra says. Adds Bianca: "I thought I was just taking advantage of a place to stay. But I think it was a much larger fate." They began to write and sing together, and soon after released their 2004 debut as CocoRosie, La Maison de Mon Reve.

Their latest record, the haunting, whimsical Noah's Ark (Touch and Go), represents a new phase of their relationship. "The first record was so insular," says Sierra. "This one's a lot more turbulent and more of a journey."
