Night Watch

Interview,  July, 2005  by Sam Schechner

REVIEW: NIGHT WATCH

(Fox Searchlight) Directed by Timur Bekmambetov

The forces of night and day have long guarded an uneasy truce--one which is close to crumbling and taking the world down with it in this first installment of a Russian blockbuster trilogy. It's the inverse of The Matrix: a sweeping battle between good and evil superimposed upon the schizophrenia of present-day Moscow, which appears dominated equally by hulking Soviet-era apartment blocks and fetish-worthy electronics. They say that this film is Hollywood recast in the Russian mold--but Tinseltown would do well to take some notes, too.
