The White Stripes: Get Behind Me Satan

Interview,  July, 2005  by Stephen Mooallem

THE WHITE STRIPES Get Behind Me Satan (Third Man/V2)

At times, Jack White seems like a guy who has ventured into the natty basement of an abandoned old house and come out wearing a woman's hat and a feather boa with an armful of illicit love letters written by people long dead. That spirit is what characterizes the White Stripes' new album, the duo's fifth, which dredges up and dresses up a variety of genres, from old-time country and spiritual blues to splintered punk rock and Depression-era folk. Given that the Stripes are mingling with types of music that have all at various points been chalked up to diabolic intervention, the record more than lives up to its title.
