Tropical Malady

Interview,  July, 2005  by Michael Koresky

REVIEW: TROPICAL MALADY

(Strand) Directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul

In a season dominated by flying saucers and brooding superheroes, the greatest special effect you're likely to see onscreen is the uncompromising nature of this abstract masterpiece from Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Set in a rural village outside of Bangkok, the film is a gentle evocation of two young men falling in love which sharply segues into a Buddhist fable about a shape-shifting man-tiger that's being tracked through the jungle by its lost lover. Resplendent, provocative, and totally original, the film proves why Apichatpong is one of the crucial voices in contemporary art cinema.
