Saraband

Interview,  July, 2005  by Patrick Giles

REVIEW: SARABAND

(Sony Classics) Directed by Ingmar Bergman

Thirty-one years ago, Ingmar Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage (1974) offered an unforgettable portrait of a husband and wife in love and crisis. This 2003 made-for-Swedish-television film reintroduces us to those characters (reprised here magnificently by Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson), as well as the themes of faith, creativity, and despair that inspired so much of Bergman's greatest work. The film is an envoi from a director who still has more energy and artistry in him than most filmmakers who weren't even born yet during his heyday. Patrick Giles
