Death from Above 1979: You're a Woman, I'm a Machine

Interview,  Feb, 2005  by Kevin Sintumuang

DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979 You're a Woman, I'm a Machine (Vice)

Take two Toronto hipsters, a bass, a drum kit, and a fistful of amphetamines, and you're under the influence of the sweaty, sexually fused noise-rock band Death From Above 1979. Even with their instrumental limitations, they can scream and distort with the best of them while still boasting huge hooks and tireless dance beats. The story of the "1979" is the best summation of the band: When threatened with a lawsuit from dance-rock label DFA, the pair simply added four numbers after its name--the minimum to avoid litigation. That's the spirit of DFA 1979: punk and irresistibly, humorously juvenile.
