Radiohead

Interview,  June, 2003  by Matt Diehl

Hall to the Thief (Capitol)

On the latest Radiohead effort, oddball anti--power ballads rub up against the Jeff Buckley expansiveness--meets--Aphex Twin dissonance we've come to love since 2000's abstract masterpiece Kid A. Jagged post-punk guitars are a new emphasis, but it's all linked by Thom Yorke's gorgeous wail, reminding us that for all of Radiohead's sharp edges, their capacity for unalloyed beauty remains constant. Prettiness, though, was never shot through with such substance.
