Song for the 100

National Catholic Reporter,  July 6, 2007  by Ethel Pochocki

Song for the 100

A truck heading for the slaughterhouse
   with 5,000 rabbits overturned
   in Hungary, Most were killed
or recaptured but 100 rabbits escaped

Free at last! Free at last!
   Ring the joyous, jangling bells,
   They'll be no man's repast!

   Cavort, carouse, collapse in mirth
   Nibble the burgeoning greens,
   Humbly, sweetly, kiss the earth

   Then in huddled, moonlit sleep
   Remember the brethren left behind.
At play as well in celestial keep.
