In Montgomery: and other poems - Top Shelf - Brief Article - Book Review

In Montgomery and other poems by by Gwendolyn Brooks (Third World Press, $22.95) is the last volume of writing that the former Poet Laureate of Illinois worked on prior to her December 2000 death. Here, as always, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author provides a moving collection of poetry serving as a celebration of the written word. The epic title poem, written for EBONY in 1971 with photographs by Pulitzer Prize-winner Moneta Sleet Jr., is powerful work based on chats" with Montgomery citizens, that is both commentary and challenge.
