Garter snake
Christian Century, May 31, 2003 by Robert Siegel
I am a line going somewhere-- Here and gone. You can't believe your eyes, for where you see me I have already been, a sly dividing purpose in the dissheveled grass, an S that writes and disappears-- except when I coil to Q and flag Morse too rapid to read with a sound like a deflating tire. Like an unsteady wire coil I sample the air, sample the air of its small electricity. When the threat passes I uncoil and shiver away into a crevice where I wait with a question.
