Singer Don Ho undergoes experimental stem cell transplant for heart problem in Thailand

Don Ho, the legendary Hawaiian singer best known for his signature songs "Tiny Bubbles" and the "Hawaiian Wedding Song" is recovering in a Thailand Hospital after undergoing an experimental stem cell transplant not yet approved in the US, according to the Associated Press.

Ho, 75, had been suffering from cardiomyopathy for the past year and had a pacemaker put in a few months ago. His Honolulu-based cardiologist Edward Shen, MD, said conventional surgery was not going to help Ho and recommended the experimental surgery as a last resort to improve his client's condition, the Bangkok Post reported.

Bank Heart Hospital's chief cardio-thoracic surgeon Kitipan Visudharom, MD, injected stem cells taken from Ho's own blood into his heart on December 5.
