NIAID head Fauci wins Lasker Award for Public Service in Medical Research/Health Sciences

Transplant News,  Oct, 2007

Anthony S. Fauci, MD, director of the National Institutes of Health National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for the past 23 years, has been named 2007 winner of the prestigious Mary Woodard Lasker Award for Public Service in Support of Medical Research and the Health Sciences. Fauci was specifically cited for his role as the principal architect of two major US governmental programs, one aimed at AIDS and the other at biodefense.

The Lasker Foundation also presented awards for medical research to three other scientists.

Alain Carpentier of Paris, France and Albert Starr of Portland, OR were winners of the Albert Lasker Award in clinical research. They were cited for their work on the development of prosthetic mitral and aortic valves, which have prolonged and enhanced the lives of millions of people with heart disease.

Ralph Steinman of Rockefeller University in New York City was awarded the Albert Lasker prize for basic research for the discovery of dendritic cells - the preeminent component of the immune system that initiates and regulates the body's response to foreign antigens.

The four scientists received their $150,000 awards at a ceremony in September.
