International Center for Patient Safety launches web site

A new web site designed to serve as a major, central repository of resources and information related to all aspects of patient safety has been launched by the recently opened Joint Commission International Center for Patient Safety, according to an April 18, 2005, news release from the Joint Commission International Center for Patient Safety. The web site's content is relevant for patients, employers, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and all types of health care organizations worldwide.

The site, http://www.jcipatientsafety.org, provides a wide array of practical solutions that can be used to improve the safety and quality of patient care in health care environments such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, physician offices, nursing homes, home care settings, behavioral health centers, and assisted-living facilities. It provides health care organizations and health professionals with information on the most frequent types of reported sentinel events and their root causes, resources for understanding and meeting the National Patient Safety Goals, and Sentinel Event Alert recommendations. Patients, their family members, and employers can use the center's web site to obtain quality-related performance information on health care organizations, become familiar with public education campaigns on patient safety, and learn about public policy issues that affect patient safety.

The new web site is one of the first priority projects for the recently formed International Center for Patient Safety. Jointly sponsored by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and Joint Commission Resources, the Center advocates for safety in health care by prompting the adoption of solutions that are based on sound scientific research, expert professional consensus opinion, and principles of multi-disciplinary education.
