"OR Fact and Principle" states that iron-on tape is preferable to sewn-on patches for mending hospital linens and drapes because sewing puts holes in the linen, thus breaking the aseptic barrier when it is used for sterile draping. * An article on laryngoscopy and esophagoscopy includes an x-ray of the esophagus of a four-year-old girl who had swallowed four open safety pins and two buttons and an x-ray of the esophagus of an adult who had inadvertently swallowed a dental bridge.

* An article discusses "air surgery" instruments (ie, those with a pneumatic power source). * "News in ORbit" reports on the first use of a laser beam to remove a tumor from a patient's leg. Lasers had previously been used only in eye surgery.
