Specific behaviors may influence family health

AORN Journal,  Nov, 2004

Preliminary results at a psychological study indicate that healthy family functioning can be attributed to 14 specific behaviors, according to an Aug 18, 2004, news release from the Psychological Studies Institute. Using statistical analysis, the study, which began in 1994 and includes 400 families so far, found that 83% of a family's health appears attributable to 14 sets of behaviors. In order of importance, these are

* problem solving,

* affirmation,

* open communication,

* clear boundaries,

* family rituals and traditions,

* trust,

* healthy sexuality,

* healthy family of origin relationships,

* religious/faith core,

* community connection,

* time together and shared interests,

* physical and financial well-being,

* adaptation to stress and loss, and

* behavior control.

The study, which is called the "Healthy Family Inventory," helps to expand the clinical literature on family functioning, which primarily has focused on dysfunctions.
