Demand for minimally invasive cosmetic procedures rises

Consumer demand for minimally invasive plastic surgery increased 41% in 2003, resulting in more than 6.9 million procedures being performed in that year, according to a March 8, 2004, news release from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Botulinum toxin type A (ie, Botox) injections were up 157% from 2002 to 2003, and collagen injections were up 30%.

The public has become more aware of treatments such as botulinum toxin type A and hyaluronic acid (ie, Restylane) because of the media attention they have received. Human collagen was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, which may account for the increase in collagen injections. Human collagen does not require an allergy test before injection; therefore, there is no waiting period.

The top five cosmetic procedures performed in 2003 were

* botulinum toxin type A injections (2,891,390),

* chemical peels (995,238),

* microdermabrasion (935,984),

* Laser hair removal (623,297), and

* collagen injections (576,255).

The majority (ie, 86%) of people who underwent cosmetic procedures were women, and botulinum toxin type A injections were the most popular procedures with both men and women.

People ages 35 to 50 underwent the most minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, at 46%. Next were people ages 51 to 64, at 26%, and people ages 19 to 34, at 19%.

Many cosmetic procedures are being performed by unqualified physicians or nonphysicians. With the percentage of minimally invasive cosmetic procedures being performed by ASPS certified surgeons increasing 64%, however, ASPS believes that the public is hearing the message regarding the importance of using qualified, licensed experts for cosmetic procedures.
