Fundamentals of Nursing. - book review

AORN Journal,  April, 2003  by Robert Scheu

fifth ed By Patricia A. Potter and Anne Griffin Perry 2001, 1785 pp $68 hardback

As the OR becomes a more complex and technology driven patient care area, it is easy to shift the focus from patient care to the computers, devices, and products that fill hallways and supply areas. In ever greater numbers, products and equipment are pouting into the OR, centering inservice programs and clinician training on the newest lasers and the most complex products used in surgery.

This book is a refreshing return to the core of nursing care. It should be a staple in every clinician's, educator's, and manager's library for the best in nursing care and instruction, and it should serve as a daily reminder of what our focus needs to be. It provides step-by-step instruction on nursing care, interventions, assessments, and care planning.

The text is divided into comprehensive chapters reflective of nursing school programs. They are detailed, well-illustrated, and offer in-depth information in an easy-to-use format. The book starts with health and wellness and continues with body systems, nursing assessments, nursing diagnoses, and basic and advanced nursing practice. It even includes chapters on ethics, professional roles, and nursing research. It offers an exhaustive review for both aspiring students and seasoned advance practice nurses.

Nursing's foundation, patient care, and patient advocacy are described and explained in detail. The authors capture the art and science of nursing and break down complex principles and practices into easy-to-follow learning modules. This invaluable tool must become part of staff member education and clinician training. The methods of nursing care so clearly explained are what we must strive to refocus on and return to. This book is an excellent resource for teaching and the standard for nursing care. A copy should be placed in every patient care area.
