Bone Marrow Transplants

OB/GYN News,  March 15, 2000  by Joyce Frieden

The nation's largest health insurer announced last month that it will no longer cover most bone marrow transplants for breast cancer patients. Aetna U.S. Healthcare's decision came shortly after researchers disclosed that a South African study showing the treatment's efficacy contained falsified data.

That announcement, along with four other studies that failed to show a survival benefit, convinced Aetna that the procedure wasn't worth the $100,000 price tag. Several patient advocacy groups, including the National Breast Cancer Coalition, supported Aetna's decision.
