Ford, REI Join Launch of National Geographic TV Channel - Brief Article

WASHINGTON--The National Geographic Channel debuts Jan. 7 in 10 million cable TV homes, following a fall survey revealing the yellow border magazine ranks second in awareness (behind M&Ms) out of 153 brands. While NGC is discussing launch promotions with unnamed airline, automotive and retail partners, "We do have the strength of the brand and the luxury of being able to launch a network in a very crowded environment," said Laureen Ong, channel president.

Ford is honoring National Geographic with a conservation award during a live opening night tribute and 18 REI outdoor gear stores have map kiosks promoting NGC.
