Behemoth Unilever Acquires Ben & Jerry's, Slim-Fast

MONTPELIVER, VT.--Ben & Jerry's, the ice cream maker known for social activism and eccentric flavors, was sold last week to Unilever for $326 million. The agreement calls for Ben & Jerry's to remain in Vermont and operate separately from Unilever's U.S. business with its own independent board of directors.

Unilever, a $45 billion company that markets brands such as Lipton tea, Wish-Bone salad dressings and Dove soap, adds Ben & Jerry's super-premium brand to its Good Humor and Breyer's ice cream portfolio. Separately last week, Unilever bought Florida-based Slim-Fast Foods, a maker of nutritional and weight control supplements, for $2.3 billion.
