Herbs for kids

Vegetarian Times,  July-August, 2005

Three herbs may help kids with health problems, according to a University of Chicago analysis published in the March 2005 issue of The Journal of Pediatrics.

* EVENING PRIMROSE oil may help children suffering from eczema, a dry, itchy skin condition.

* VALERIAN oil may improve the sleep of hyperactive boys.

* EXTRACT OF IVY LEAF might enable children with asthma and bronchial conditions to breathe more easily.

Although the herbs may benefit children, lead researcher Gail Mahady, PhD, says herbs are no substitute for medical treatment for people with chronic conditions and should not be used without consulting a medical professional. "Parents need to know that there may be drug interactions with herbal supplements," she tells VT.
