Pill popping?

College students seem to be using dietary supplements in record quantities, but that doesn't mean they ate using them wisely. More than 42 percent of 1,000 college students surveyed by researchers from the University of North Florida say they use supplements or have used them in the past, which suggests ah admirable concern for their health.

But below the surface of the research, reported in the March 2002 issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, are potentially disturbing signs. Men, it appears, use supplements to bulk up. Women use them to slim down. There's a better way, of course. Incorporating a daily multivitamin supplement with healthy food choices and regular physical exercise continues to be the preferred method for achieving the results that the students seek, writes David Grotto, director of nutrition education at Block Medical Center in Evanston, Illinois.
