And the beef goes on …

Vegetarian Times,  August, 2001  by Maria Rabat

In the June issue of Vegetarian Times, we reported that McDonald's continues to use beef fat, or tallow, in the preparation of its french fries. The substance is sprayed on during the par-frying process at the potato processing plant. Since then, the fast food giant's little secret became headline news, and as a result a Seattle attorney, who also happens to be vegetarian, is suing McDonald's for millions of dollars in damages for fraudulently claiming that the fries are cooked in pure vegetable oil.

The furor has also prompted health authorities in India to test the french fries sold in Bombay, home to 10 McDonald's franchises. India's predominantly Hindu population eschews beef, and, supposedly, all the McDonald's in India are beef-free. Stay tuned.
