Tahini - Brief Article

Vegetarian Times,  June, 2000  by C.M.

A common ingredient in Mideastern cooking, tahini is also called sesame butter or the butter of the Middle East. The flavorful spread is made from ground sesame seeds and its rich flavor makes it a perfect ingredient for a variety of foods, from savory hummus to sweet candy. While it is relatively high in calories and fat (about 180 calories and 16 grams fat per 2 tablespoons) tahini gets only about 10 percent of those calories from saturated fat.

It is high in protein, B vitamins, calcium and iron.
