Now we know why
Vegetarian Times, Feb, 2004
For centuries, St. John's wort has been used to treat burns, bruises and infections, but only now are scientists beginning to figure out why the herb works. Researchers from Ege University in Turkey, whose findings are published in the July 2003 issue of the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, have found that St.
John's wort inhibits the activity of an enzyme named myeloperoxidase, which promotes inflammation. It worked in clinical trials "within just a few minutes, and the effect was greater with higher dosages," says an October 2003 report by the VERIS Research Information Service.
